What type of vehicle is this?

Car

Make, Model, Year of Project

Ford Mustang 1966

What stage is this in?

Completed Project

When did you purchase it and for how much?

I purchased the car late in 1999

The purchase price was $2000

Why did you choose this vehicle?

I wanted to restore an early model as I had restored at least a dozen wrecked fox body Mustangs for myself and others.

I really loved to work on cars and make them look better than new.

What sort of condition was it in when you started the project, what was wrong with it, etc.

It was a basket case.

Someone had started the restoration by disassembly and all parts were in boxes so it was a small gamble but I wanted to give it a go.

What, specifically have you done, or had done to it?

I was the main visionary, researcher and labor assembler.

Can you list any and all parts that you have put in?

The car was a non rotisserie restoration, but the bottom was hand cleaned and coated.

All metal was replaced except for the roof and cowl which were in perfect condition.

The car was built to drive as I added a Borgson power steering, classic auto heat/air and front disc brakes.

The engine was the gamble as it was already rebuilt, I just plumbed it and it has been a great running 70 model 302 block with the 66 heads.

All glass was replaced with tinted glass.

The interior is the complete TMI sport R that I stretched on several hot summer days. It also has a JL audio system with the classic audio radio for the modern connections

Where have you purchased your parts?

Ebay, Amazon, CJ Pony, Mustang Depot, Kentucky Mustang, and a few others that had discounted sales.

This was as much as a budget build as possible but it still adds up!!

What about you?

I’m what I call a shade tree mechanic that loves Mustangs.

This car was a challenge as none of the parts were like repairing a fox body as nothing just bolted up.

It seem that everything needed a nudge but once you get into it, it really is a pretty easy model to work on.

Any stories regarding this project?

I first took it out in the fall of 2018 to a local fund raising car show. It took home a top 10 car and I was pleased.

In March of 2019, I registered for PITS (Ponies in the Smokies) in Sevierville, TN. I had a huge amount of interest in the 700 car event and met many new friends that I shared my journey and tried to help them with their journey.

The weekend ended with my car being selected as the Mustang Monthly Magazine Editors Choice Award!! I was absolutely over the moon!

Any garages, parts stores, fabrication shops, etc you want to call out specifically?

I have two main people that help directly with my build.

Greg Dotson of D&D Mustang in Greenback, TN for the metal work replacement to eliminate all rust and Billy Palmer of Decatar, TN for paint and body.

I can’t leave out my wife and son’s that helped and supported me along the way.
