I’m going to fix it, someday

If you have been around cars, or car guys, you have undoubtedly heard this at some point, either in person or, via a story about a dream car just sitting, rotting away.

When I saw this picture, I had to laugh, because, I have seen this many times and have even asked the person, when they thought they might get around to it. Yes, it kills me to see something just rotting away, never to be used again, never to be enjoyed again. You see, there is a point where something is just too far gone.

That said, I have seen people pull what looked like total junk out of the woods, or out of the ground and completely restore it. Yes, I love that, I love it when something gets a complete restoration, gets rebuilt to be what it was meant to be, in its glory days, or gets built to be something better, mixing old and new, to become something with greater function and purpose.

Cars are not the only thing that I have seen this in. I have seen people hold on to an old house and let it rot to the point of falling down, because they wanted to “rebuild” it, someday. The day never comes and it just wastes away, to be forgotten and trashed.

We, as a general rule, put off what we do not deem as important. Sure, that old car or truck has meaning, or may be your dream, but, other things have become more important, so you push it aside, again, with the idea that you’ll fix it tomorrow. That old house that you purchased to fix, or that you inherited from old Aunt Bessy and Uncle Wilbur would be a great project, which you intend to do, but, it is over there and other things are making it impossible to get to today, so, you figure you will have more time, tomorrow.

This is also what we do with our lives. With our very soul. (See my article, called Restoration.) It is over there, it is far off, it just isn’t important right now. We don’t give any thought to where we will spend eternity, because, we are living here, right now. We already have a life to live, responsibilities, desires, so, there is no time, today, to get to our very soul.

Here is a quote I found that I think hits the nail on the head.

I know there are people who hear me preach regularly who will never consider changing their way of living They will go ‘underground’ before they will do that! Our situation is not an isolated case. There are millions of men and women with an understanding of the revelation of God in Jesus Christ, who are still not willing to receive and commit themselves to Him whom the very angels and stars and rivers receive. They hesitate and they delay because they know God is asking the abdication of their own selfish little kingdom and interests. This is the tragedy of mankind, my brethren! We have rejected Him from our lives because we must have our own way. But until Jesus Christ is sincerely received, there can be no knowledge of salvation, nor any understanding of the things of God. The little, selfish, sinful man rejects the Son of God. While he is still enumerating the things he deserves, the Son of God stands outside. My brethren, I repeat: this is the great tragedy of mankind!
A. W. Tozer Sermon: Unwilling To Yield

Think about that, ponder it, are you one who will not listen?

I hear, a lot, from people I meet that they aren’t worried about where they will go when they die, they are alive, young and healthy, they have plenty of time to consider that, tomorrow. This makes me very sad, because the Bible is very clear, tomorrow is not promised. We do not know when Jesus will return for His people.

Mark 13:32-37 (ESV)

32 “But concerning that day or that hour, no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. 33 Be on guard, keep awake.[a] For you do not know when the time will come. 34 It is like a man going on a journey, when he leaves home and puts his servants[b] in charge, each with his work, and commands the doorkeeper to stay awake. 35 Therefore stay awake—for you do not know when the master of the house will come, in the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows,[c] or in the morning— 36 lest he come suddenly and find you asleep. 37 And what I say to you I say to all: Stay awake.”

Luke 12:35-40 (ESV)

35 “Stay dressed for action[f] and keep your lamps burning, 36 and be like men who are waiting for their master to come home from the wedding feast, so that they may open the door to him at once when he comes and knocks. 37 Blessed are those servants[g] whom the master finds awake when he comes. Truly, I say to you, he will dress himself for service and have them recline at table, and he will come and serve them. 38 If he comes in the second watch, or in the third, and finds them awake, blessed are those servants! 39 But know this, that if the master of the house had known at what hour the thief was coming, he[h] would not have left his house to be broken into. 40 You also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.”

God does not promise another breath. I have shared 2 passages from Scripture so that you can see the urgency with which you need to place upon where your soul ends up. You could live another 25 years, or you could die before the end of this sentence. I urge you, take care of your soul, now. Stop putting the things of the world before your very soul.

Luke 9:25

25 For what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses or forfeits himself?

This verse in it’s context is shown below. I urge you to read it, but I also urge you to read my article on Restoration.

Luke 9:23-27

23 And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. 24 For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it. 25 For what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses or forfeits himself? 26 For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words, of him will the Son of Man be ashamed when he comes in his glory and the glory of the Father and of the holy angels. 27 But I tell you truly, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God.”

I urge you to make your decision now, for, you have been shown the truth and have no excuse. Choose this day, who will you serve?

My name is Dennis. First, let me just say, I am a Christian, a husband, a father to 1 beautiful step-daughter and 3 strapping young boys and a step-grandfather (She calls me “Grumpy”) to a gorgeous step-granddaughter. These will always be my priorities, no matter what my interests are. That said, I strive to keep and maintain a family friendly atmosphere, so my boys and their friends can enjoy the site as much as I do. (Granddaughter isn’t old enough and daughter has other interests.)

  1. Aw, this was an extremely nice post. Taking a few minutes and actual effort to produce a superb article… but what can I say… I procrastinate a lot and don’t seem to get anything done.
